Bio: Ben has progressed to managing the Icon Motorsport team after gaining an interest in motorsport from an early age. Ben’s father Brian had been involved in Off-Road racing and was always watching the racing on T.V. (See Ben’s driver profile for more details).

Ben, a Fitter/ Machinist by trade has learnt a wide variety of skills that he is now able to put to good use in managing the Icon Motorsport racing team. The experience Brian gained in Off-Road Racing, where he built and competed very successfully in a car he built himself, quickly became useful for him in his new challenge of setting up a go-Kart for Ben. Over the following years Ben has been able to learn the skills required to successfully prepare and maintain race cars, to a very high level, from his father.

Throughout Ben’s racing career the one thing that never changes or falters is the team mechanics. Ben and his father Brian have always carried out all engine work, repairs and maintenance, from Go-Karts through to Formula 2, enabling Ben to receive optimum experience both in and out of the car, on and off the track. This teamwork is the backbone of Icon Motorsport Racing Team.

Starting his apprenticeship in 1995, at Waratah Engineering in Newcastle, Ben learnt a great variety of machining techniques including spending a year on Computer Numerical Control machinery.

When Ben finished his time at Waratah he started working for himself as Morley Performance Engineering, mainly working on Go-Kart engines and Kart repair work, as well as doing some race car setting up and gearbox re-conditioning. Ben also started working casual shifts at a Sheetmetal Fabrication workshop before then working there full time for 4 years.

Ben’s role at the sheetmetal workshop was to do all maintenance and repair work on machinery, carry out all of the general machining work required and to also do sheetmetal fabrication work.

Ben has proven to be a very valuable asset to Icon, using his widely acquired skills to focus on managing the preparation side of the Icon Motorsport Formula Ford Racing Team.
