Icon Motorsport Gets that Winning Feeling:
Icon Motorsport team driver Ben Morley has made a winning return to the New South Wales Formula Ford Series after an eight year absence by taking out the opening round at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway last weekend (March 25 & 26).
Driving the # 72 Spectrum 09B, Morley showed his class by powering to wins in all three races after kicking off the weekend by topping qualifying too!
The # 72 car was proudly supported by Stubbies Workwear in 2005 and continued to carry the Stubbies livery in this first round of 2006 as a statement of gratitude for the enormous support provided by Stubbies last year
“I certainly couldn’t have hoped for a better weekend,” a jubilant Morley said.
“We went with a base setup at the start of the weekend, made improvements as we went along and by the third race the car was very strong.”
Despite taking out all three races, Morley didn’t have it all his own way, with Victorian Taz Douglas keeping him honest as the pair battled around the 2.2km Wakefield Park circuit.
“Taz (Douglas) and I had some really good battles over the weekend for the lead and it has been quite a while since I have been able to do that,” Morley explained.
“We gave each other plenty of racing room and it was something I really enjoyed.”
Aside from the personal achievement, Morley was thrilled to score such a result for the entire Icon Motorsport team.
“Throughout the weekend we were all on a buzz and it was fantastic to be able to give the team such a thrill,” Morley expressed.
“Our team has worked really hard and it’s great to bring home such a result, as it’s lifted the spirits of our team immensely.”
With the NSW Formula Ford Series lead in his grasp, Morley is looking forward to the remainder of the year.
“Back in 1998 we finished a narrow second behind Stewart McColl after some very close racing all year,” recalled Morley.
“This year I would dearly love to go one better and I know that after this weekend’s performance we well and truly have the package to be an outright contender.”
Icon Motorsport team owner and driver, Derryn Harrison, was ecstatic with Morley’s achievements over the course of the weekend and was also rapt with his own results aboard the # 66 Vodafone Team Spectrum 06B.
“I don’t think I’m going to be able to wipe the smile off my face for a while yet,” beamed Harrison.
“It’s wonderful to have a driver of Ben’s caliber with us and this result is a reward for all the hard work the Morley family have put into this team over the past two and a half years.”
On a personal note, Harrison finished the three races without any dramas and scored 15th, 10th and 13th place respectively.
“My weekend went trouble free with no spins, no dramas and we managed to finish every race,” Harrison said.
“To record a Top 10 finish in race two was very rewarding and it just proves that I am starting to develop my skills as a driver.”
Morley and Harrison will be next seen in action at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway for round two of the NSW Formula Ford Series on April 29 – 30.
